A professional is generally taken hostage for one of three reasons.

Possession - You possess something of value. This is not insinuating only items of monetary value. These possessions can be vehicles, money, children, documents, sensitive materials, passports and any forms of identification used to gain either information or physical access.
Body – Situations involving rape, political capture, or symbolic acts of aggression rooted from extremist ideological agendas, systematically orchestrated to achieve the explicit objective of casting fear throughout various media channels.
